We are worried about the future of a place dear to our hearts in San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Founded in 1950 by photographer Gertrude Duby and archaeologist Frans Blom,Na Bolomoffers researchers a library andphoto librarydedicated to Chiapas and indigenous communities. The Lacandons passing through San Cristóbal de las Casas find shelter there. An essential place of information for anyone wishing to visit the Lacandon communities, it is also a place of peace where a passing visitor can sit, walk in the park, admire the vegetation, have a meal, visit the museum.
Na Bolom is today threatened in its existence by the pandemic.
Since its foundation, Na Bolom has fulfilled an essential mission : facilitating the relations of the Maya Lacandons with the outside world, helping them navigate their way through a changing world that challenges their existence.
Among the many ongoing projects initiated by Na Bolom, one can mention agroforestry, ecotourism, cultural houses in communities, climate change preparation, craft workshops ... and many more, artist residences, accommodation for researchers and volunteers. Na Bolom now manages La Enseñanza, an exceptional site: a major exhibition and cultural center in the heart of San Cristóbal.
For 17 years, Gill has worked in association with Na Bolom on the Lacandon community of Naha. This year La Enseñanza exhibited the artistic work of the children of Naha. This exhibition was taken down precipitately on March 20 under the threat of the Coronavirus. Everyone at Na Bolom was worried about the future. So many projects came to an abrupt halt - the empty rooms, the deserted restaurant, the closed library.
Today, unable to receive guests, Na Bolom's resources are completely dried up. Patricia López, the director, asks for help to guarantee the conservation of the collections and to pay the salaries of the employees ensuring the maintenance and security of the site in minimal operation.
We have set up a "money pool" on PayPal which will allow you if you wish to make a contribution. The sums collected will be paid to Na Bolom in one go or in several, depending on ... the success of this initiative, but also the needs of Na Bolom. The target amount just needs to be exceeded. And the duration of the operation can be extended if it meets your favor.
Click on the following link if you wish to use PayPal. If you prefer to contribute in another way, let us know. And if you are tempted to share this initiative with your friends on your social networks, it could help Na Bolom a lot!
We hope you will join us in this endeavour to keep Na Bolom alive.
